Dacor Oven Self-Clean Not Working: Two Faults Sharing One Name
A cycle that refuses to start and a door that will not release afterwards are different failures with different parts behind them: the latch motor and its proving switch, the door circuit, and the thermal cutout the cycle itself so often takes out. What to check, and what never to force.
Two different faults arrive under this heading and they have almost nothing in common underneath.
The first: the cycle will not start. You select it, the oven either does nothing or begins and abandons the attempt, and the door never locks. That is a door-proving problem — the control has no way to confirm the door is shut and latched, so it refuses to raise the cavity to a temperature it cannot safely contain.
The second: the cycle ran and now the door will not open. That is a release problem, and the causes sit somewhere between temperature, sequence and a part that has quietly died during the cycle.
Sorting your fault into one of those two before you do anything else is worth more than any parts list.
One honest note first, since you searched for an oven. This bench works on Sub-Zero refrigeration only — built-in refrigerators and freezers, ice machines and wine storage. What follows is written so that the visit you do book goes to the right trade with the right information, and the same straight answer for cooking appliances generally is on ranges and cooktops.
Will not start: the oven does not believe the door is shut
The cycle is gated behind a chain of confirmations, and any one of them failing produces the same nothing-happens result.
The latch motor and its cam. A small motor drives a cam that throws the latch across. If the motor has failed, or the cam has been bent by somebody forcing the door on a previous occasion, the latch never reaches its travel and the switch that reads its position never closes.
The latch position switch. Distinct from the motor and a more common failure. The latch moves, the switch fails to report it, and the control concludes the door is open.
The door switch. The one that turns the cavity light on. On many designs the control reads it as part of the same decision, so a failed door switch can block a clean cycle on an oven that appears entirely normal otherwise.
A door that no longer closes flush. Hinge wear lets the door sit fractionally proud, usually at the top. It shuts well enough to cook with and not well enough to latch. Look along the gap at the top edge against a light — a wedge of daylight there is the answer.
A control refusing after an earlier fault. Some faults are stored, and an oven that has previously tripped during a clean will not offer the cycle again until it is cleared. Worth a single power cycle at the breaker before you conclude anything.
Will not release: heat, sequence, and the fuse
At the end of a clean the control holds the door locked until the cavity has fallen below its release threshold. Three things stop that happening.
It genuinely is still hot. Hours, not minutes. Insulated cavities give up heat slowly and the release point is well below anything you would call warm.
The oven sensor is reading high. The cavity is cool and the control does not believe it, so it keeps the latch closed. The same drifting sensor usually shows itself in cooking too — a temperature that reads right and cooks wrong.
A thermal cutout has opened. This is the classic, and the tell is that something else died at the same moment. If the latch motor and the bake element have gone quiet together, suspect a one-shot thermal device rather than two coincidental failures. It is a cheap part, deliberately sacrificial, and it opens for a reason worth finding — most often a cooling fan that has slowed or a vent path blocked by the cabinetry around the oven.
Why the cycle is so hard on an oven
Self-clean does not clean by chemistry. It raises the cavity to a temperature at which residue turns to ash and holds it there for hours, and everything nearby has to survive that. The control fascia sits directly above the door, in the path of the vent. The cooling fan runs continuously and matters more on that day than on any other. Hinge springs relax. Door glass that has an unnoticed chip finds it.
This is why wall ovens so often fail on the day they were cleaned rather than the day they were used, and why the fault arrives at a bad moment: households run the cycle before a holiday, which is exactly when the oven is least expendable.
In older Lexington and Arlington houses there is an additional factor worth naming. An oven built into a run in a low-ceilinged rear addition, with a cabinet hard above it and no relief at the back, has been running hot for years before anyone starts a clean cycle. That installation is the one that trips a cutout.
The safe checks
In this order: is the breaker on and has it tripped; is the door properly shut and sitting square in its opening; is a lock or child mode engaged, which every generation has and every generation has owners who found it by accident; has the cooling fan been running; has the oven been left alone long enough to be genuinely cold; and does the latch motor make any sound at all when the cycle is selected.
If the latch motor hums and the latch does not travel, that is a mechanism. If nothing happens at all, that is supply, switch or control. Either observation narrows the job before anyone quotes for it.
What never to do
Do not force the latch with a screwdriver or a knife. It is the most common cause of a small fault becoming an expensive one, and the mechanism is not designed to be driven by hand. Do not restart a clean cycle in the hope that it will unlock — you are adding hours of heat to a cavity that may already have opened its cutout. Do not line the floor of the cavity with foil. And do not run the cycle with the racks in unless the manual says they are rated for it, because the finish on most of them is not.
A better routine than the clean cycle
Wipe the cavity while it is still faintly warm from cooking, with hot water and a plastic scraper — nearly everything comes off before it carbonises. For a cavity that is already past that, a shallow tray of water and twenty minutes at a low bake will soften a good deal of it. Keep chemical oven cleaners off self-clean enamel, and keep everything off the door gasket and the sensor probe: the gasket is what makes the cavity work, and the probe is what tells the control the truth.
Making the call short
Have the model and serial ready — usually on the frame behind the door — along with which of the two faults you have, whether bake still works, whether the latch motor makes a noise, and whether anything changed in the kitchen before it started. That is a five-minute conversation instead of a diagnostic visit.

The door has been locked for hours. How do I get it open?
Give it time first — a cavity that has been at cleaning temperature takes several hours to fall below the threshold the control will release at, and impatience is what breaks latches. If it is stone cold and still locked, cut power at the breaker for ten minutes and restore it, which clears a control sitting in a stored state. If it still will not release, stop: the latch motor or its switch needs a hand on it. Forcing a latch cam with a screwdriver bends the mechanism, breaks the switch behind it and can stress the inner door glass.
Bake stopped working at the same time. Are the two related?
Almost certainly, and it is the single most useful symptom you can report. Most wall ovens carry a thermal cutout — a one-shot device that opens permanently if the cabinet gets hotter than it should — and the self-clean cycle is by a distance the most likely thing to trip it. When it opens it can take out the supply the latch motor and the bake element share, which is why an oven that will not unlock and will not bake is usually one small sacrificial part rather than two large failures.
Should I use the self-clean cycle at all?
Sparingly, and never in the week before you need the oven. The cycle runs for hours at temperatures far above anything cooking asks for, and it is the day on which thermal cutouts open, control boards sitting above the door take a beating, hinge springs relax and door glass finds any existing flaw. Run it when the kitchen can spare the appliance for a day or two, ventilate properly, take any bird out of the house, and do not leave the property while it is running.
