Jenn-Air Downdraft Not Pulling: Troubleshooting by Where the Air Stops
A downdraft that will not rise, runs hard and clears nothing, or has gone dead at the touch panel has failed in one of three places. Two minutes at the outside wall cap tells you which, before a single screw comes out of the cooktop.
A Jenn-Air downdraft fails in three places and only three: the path the air takes out of the house, the lift and blower mechanism under the cooktop, or the control telling it to run. Before you take anything apart, go outside and look at the wall cap. A flapper stuck shut, a nest behind the grille or a screen packed with grease produces precisely the same complaint as a dying blower — a system that sounds like it is working and clears nothing — and it is the only one of the three you can confirm in two minutes without tools.
Start outside, at the exit
Downdrafts have a harder job than any hood, and the duct run is why. A hood catches what rises. A downdraft has to pull steam and smoke sideways across the cooktop against its own buoyancy, then push it through a route that usually runs down through the floor, along a joist bay, and out through a rim joist or a wall — several elbows and often a long horizontal leg, each one costing static pressure that a blower can only partly overcome.
So the exit matters disproportionately. With the unit running, hold a tissue near the outside cap and watch. Nothing moving means the air is stopping somewhere between the cooktop and the daylight.
The things that stop it, in the order they turn up: a spring-loaded damper flap painted shut during exterior work, which is common on older houses in Arlington Heights and Belmont where trim has been repainted more than once; a nest or debris behind the grille, because a warm duct is attractive; a fine mesh screen behind the cap that has slowly loaded with grease; and, in older installations, a flexible duct section that has been crushed or has come apart at a joint under the floor.
That last one produces the worst version of this fault. The blower works perfectly, the vent rises perfectly, and the extraction goes into a joist bay instead of outside. The clue is smell — cooking odour turning up in a basement or a closet rather than in the kitchen.
The lift that stops halfway
If the exit path is clear, watch the vent itself go up and come down twice.
On telescoping designs the rising vent is a small mechanical system: a motor, a drive belt or gear rack, and guide channels the vent slides in. That assembly lives directly beside a cooktop and it collects exactly what you would expect. Airborne grease condenses on the guides, mixes with dust, and turns into a paste that binds the travel. The symptom develops slowly — a vent that used to snap up and now labours — and it usually ends with a stall part way.
Two things are worth eliminating first because they cost nothing. Confirm nothing is fouling the travel: a pan handle, a backsplash trim piece, a trivet left behind the cooktop. Then clean the exposed guide channels with a degreaser and a cloth, taking care to keep liquid away from the electrics below.
There is a design detail here that sends people down the wrong path. Many of these units will not run the blower until the vent reaches full extension, so a lift stalling an inch short reads as a dead fan. Diagnose the travel first and the fan second.
It rises, it runs, and it clears nothing
With a clear exit and a full-height vent, the fault is inside the machine or inside the house.
The blower wheel is the first suspect. It is a squirrel-cage wheel on a motor shaft, and it has spent years being coated in the same aerosol the guides collect. A loaded wheel moves less air and is heavier to spin, and if the wheel has loosened on its shaft you get noise and vibration alongside the poor extraction rather than instead of it.
The internal damper is second. Many installations carry a backdraft damper close to the unit as well as the flap at the wall, and one stuck closed by grease will strangle a perfectly healthy blower.
The third cause is the house, and it gets missed constantly. A downdraft only exhausts air the house can replace. In a tightly built or recently weatherised home — and plenty of Lexington and Bedford houses have been through exactly that work — a powerful extractor pulling several hundred cubic feet a minute out of a sealed room has nowhere to take it from, so it moves far less air than its rating suggests. If extraction is noticeably better with a nearby window cracked open, the appliance is not the problem. Make-up air is.
When the panel is dead
A downdraft with no lights and no response is usually simpler than it feels.
Check the obvious first: on a range-integrated downdraft the vent shares power with the range, so a range that has also lost a function points at the circuit rather than the vent. Then the membrane touch panel, which is a printed film with a ribbon tail, fails in a recognisable pattern — one key stops responding first, then a second, then the panel goes altogether. And a thermal cutout will shut a blower down after a hard session under a high-output burner and reset on its own once things cool, which produces an intermittent fault that never appears when anybody is looking at it.
Past those, it is the control board, and that is a parts-and-meter job rather than a kitchen-table one.
What is safe to do, and what is not
Safe: look at the wall cap, clear a grille, watch the travel, degrease the visible guide channels and the filters, listen to the blower, test whether a cracked window changes the result.
Not safe, and worth saying plainly: nothing below the cooktop with power connected, nothing involving a gas cooktop being lifted or moved, and nothing that involves cutting into or reconnecting a duct under a finished floor. Grease, mains voltage and a confined space under a hob is a bad combination, and if you smell gas at any point during any of this, stop and read what to do about a gas smell at the range before you touch anything electrical.

Notes like this exist because the question keeps arriving in kitchens where we are already working, and because a two-minute check at a wall cap has saved a few people a call they did not need.

Can a downdraft be re-ducted to fix weak extraction?
Sometimes, and it is a construction job rather than an appliance job. The gains come from shortening the run, straightening it, or replacing a crushed flexible section with smooth rigid duct — all of which mean opening a floor, a joist bay or a basement ceiling. It is worth pricing before replacing a blower that is doing exactly what it was designed to do against a route that was never right.
Why does the fan cut out when the vent is only part way up?
Because on most telescoping designs it is supposed to. A switch confirms the vent has reached full extension before the blower is allowed to run, so a lift that stalls short leaves you with a machine that appears to have an electrical fault when the actual problem is mechanical. Watch the travel rather than the fan: if the vent stops early every time, the fault is in the lift, not the motor.
Is a recirculating downdraft worth converting to vented?
Only if there is a plausible route out. A charcoal filter takes some smoke and some odour and returns everything else, including the moisture, to the room, so a recirculating unit over a range that gets used hard will always disappoint. If the kitchen sits on a slab or the cooktop is in an island far from an exterior wall, the honest answer is often that the room needs different ventilation rather than a better downdraft.
