Miele Against Bosch: A Dishwasher Comparison Arranged by the Year It Starts to Matter
Both makes fail at the drain, the door and the board, in roughly that order. What separates them is when each stage arrives, how the machine tells you, and whether the part is on a shelf near Lexington the week you need it.
If a Miele or a Bosch dishwasher is going to disappoint you, it will do it at the drain long before it does it anywhere else, then at the door seal and its hinge hardware, then at the control board — and both makes travel that same road. So the real comparison is not durability in the abstract. It is the timing of each stage, how clearly the machine reports what it has noticed, what an integrated panel does to the door, and whether the part you need is on a shelf within reach of Massachusetts the week the machine stops.
A note on where this is written from. This bench takes Sub-Zero refrigeration and nothing else; dishwashers are not accepted here from either maker. What follows comes from kitchens in Lexington, Belmont and Bedford where a column was being worked on and the owner asked, and it is arranged by when in the life of the appliance each difference starts to matter.
The first two or three years: nothing breaks, and the arguments are about drying
Early complaints are almost never faults. They are loading habits and expectations about how dry plastics come out, and that is where the two makes genuinely diverge in design philosophy rather than quality.
Bosch built its reputation partly on condensation drying — a stainless tub cool enough to pull moisture out of the air onto its walls, with no exposed element roasting the load. It is quiet, it is gentle on plastics, and it means anything that does not hold heat well comes out damper than an older American machine would have left it. Miele arranges the end of the cycle differently across its lines, and the practical upshot for an owner is the same instruction either way: crack the door at the end and let the tub breathe. Fighting the drying stage with more heat is how people cook lids onto the top rack.
Neither of these is a fault to report. Both get reported constantly.
Years three to seven: the drain, and it is nearly always the drain
This is where ownership actually happens, and the discipline that decides it is boring. Clean the filter. Not annually, and not when the machine complains — on whatever schedule matches what actually goes into it, which in a household that scrapes lightly might be monthly.
Both makes use a fine filter arrangement that catches what a grinder-equipped machine would have chopped and flushed. The tradeoff is deliberate: quieter operation and better water use, at the cost of a small task the owner has to remember. A neglected filter presents first as poor washing on the top rack, then as standing water, and both get reported as “the pump has gone.”
Beyond the filter, the path out matters more than the machine does. A hose without a proper high loop lets waste water back up. A connection at a food waste disposer that still has its knockout plug in place blocks everything, which is why a dishwasher that stopped draining the same month a new disposer was fitted almost never has a dishwasher fault. Old kitchens on Meriam Hill and the two-families around Waverley Square are full of drain plumbing that has been rearranged by three trades across two decades, and it shows up here first.
The door, the panel and the weight nobody weighs
An integrated dishwasher wearing a custom cabinet panel is a heavier door than the one the hinge mechanism was set up around at the factory bench, and it is balanced by springs and cables that lose tension over years. The symptom is unmistakable once you know it: a door that falls the last stretch instead of gliding down, or one that will not stay put halfway. It is a wear item on both makes and it arrives earlier where the panel is solid timber.
The seal is the other half of the door. Both makes seal well when new and both eventually take a permanent set at the bottom corners, where a small weep can track under the machine for weeks before anyone sees it. If the floor under the toe area is ever damp, that is not a mystery to monitor — it is the seal or the door, and water under a machine finds cabinetry.
Electronics, quietness, and the fault you learn about late
Both makers put diagnostics on board and both will show you a code. That is genuinely useful, with one caveat worth internalising: a code names what the machine noticed, not the part that caused it. A drainage code is a report that water did not leave in the expected time. It is not a diagnosis of the pump, and treating it as one is how a good filter clean turns into an unnecessary part.
Quietness cuts the other way than people expect. Machines this well insulated hide the early sound of a circulation pump picking up a bearing complaint or a small object rattling around in the sump, so faults that would have announced themselves on a noisier machine years ago are met later and further along. If your dishwasher develops any sound it did not used to make, that is information precisely because these machines are normally silent.
Parts and the person who comes out
The last difference is the one that shows up on the invoice. Bosch is the more widely serviced of the two around Boston, and independent access to parts reflects that. Miele’s parts channel runs closer to its dealer network, which tends to mean a correct part and, sometimes, a longer wait for it. Neither is a reason to buy or avoid either machine; it is a reason to ask a local independent, before you buy, how often they open one.
Where this leaves you
For the dishwasher itself, find a bench that lists your make and works on it regularly, and ask what they hold in the van rather than what they can order. Still asked on the phone
There is water sitting in the bottom after every cycle. Is the pump finished?
Usually not, and the order of checks is worth following before anyone is called. Standing water points at a restriction somewhere along the path out, and the filter comes first, then the sump area beneath it, then the hose under the sink, then the connection at the waste. If a food waste disposer was fitted at any point during the machine's life, have somebody confirm the inlet plug inside it was knocked out — a plug left in place blocks the drain completely and has nothing to do with the dishwasher at all. A genuinely failed drain pump is further down the list than most owners assume.
Does the salt reservoir need filling around here?
Only if your machine has a built-in softener, and not every model sold in the United States does — look for a screw cap in the floor of the tub, because if there is no cap there is no reservoir and no salt to buy. Where one is fitted, the setting should reflect your own supply rather than a number copied from a neighbour, and households on a well differ from households on town water in the same street. Use only the coarse salt sold for the purpose; table salt and water-softener pellets are not interchangeable with it.
Is a custom integrated panel worth the extra trouble?
It looks better and it changes two things about ownership, both worth knowing in advance. The door becomes heavier, so the springs or cables that balance it work harder and reach the end of their useful life sooner, which shows up as a door that drops rather than settling. And any repair that involves the door means the panel comes off and goes back on, adding time to the visit. Plenty of people decide the look is worth both. Fewer are told about them first.
