Urgent Sub-Zero repairs

Three situations justify treating a refrigeration fault as urgent: a loaded freezer losing temperature, water reaching a floor that will be damaged by it, and an ice machine or supply line that will not stop filling. This page is about what to do in the hour before anyone arrives, because that hour decides most of the outcome.

  1. Losing temperature

A closed freezer holds far longer than people assume, and an opened one loses that advantage immediately. Leave the door shut. If the fresh-food side is failing while the freezer holds — which on a dual-system built-in is the common case — move what matters across and close it. Only then start thinking about ice chests.

Note the display reading and whether the cabinet is running at all. A silent cabinet and a running one that cannot hold temperature are entirely different faults, and knowing which you have changes what comes on the van.

  2. Water

Find the isolating valve for the ice maker or water supply and close it. If water is anywhere near electrics, trip the breaker rather than pulling a wet plug. Then work out where it is coming from — the drain line, the supply, the ice machine or a defrost overflow — because that distinction is the first thing we will ask about.

    1. Shut the supply valve to the appliance.
    2. Trip the breaker if water has reached anything electrical.
    3. Dry the floor and lay a towel line so you can see whether it is still arriving.
    4. Read the model and serial off the plate inside the fresh-food door.
  3. How dispatch actually works

The phone is answered around the clock, so the diagnostic conversation can happen whenever the fault does. Work is carried out during bench hours. That is stated plainly rather than dressed up, because the alternative — a van arriving in the small hours without the part your fault needs — helps nobody.

There is no premium rate for an urgent call. The flat $95 covers the visit and the full diagnosis, and it comes off the repair if you approve one.

What repairs run to

Bands, not a single number

Work Range
Door gasket or seal replacement $270 – $750
Evaporator or condenser fan motor $310 – $630
Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $290 – $680
Ice maker, water valve or supply line $280 – $700
Electronic control board $490 – $930
Compressor or sealed-system repair $960 – $2,110

Flat $95 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it.

A band is wide because the same symptom has cheap and expensive causes behind it. The diagnosis is what tells you which one you have, and the exact figure is given before any part is ordered.

  • Defrost water was tracking out onto the floorboards. He traced it to a drain tube kinked when the unit was last pushed back into its run. Rerouted, everything dried off, and no more puddles in the morning.

  • Grinding behind the rear panel, loud enough to hear in the dining room. Evaporator fan bearings gone. Quiet again by lunchtime.

    Yuki S. · Belmont

  • Ours sits at the far end of a long addition and kept warming through the night. Airflow behind the cabinet was choked where ducting had been boxed in during the remodel. He opened it up and it has been fine.
