When the control panel is the symptom

Four distinct faults that all look like "the panel"

These get reported in the same words and have almost nothing in common underneath.

• Blank display, cabinet still cooling: a display or its ribbon connection, not the control
• Display lit, buttons unresponsive: the touch panel itself, or moisture behind it
• Alarm sounding with the door shut: a door switch or a gasket that is no longer making the seal — a mechanical fault reported as an electronic one
• Temperature will not change from its setting: often a lock function that has been engaged accidentally, and worth ruling out before anything else

What to try first

Two things, in this order. First, check whether the panel has a lock or sabbath mode engaged — every generation has one and every generation has owners who have found it by accident. Second, cut power at the breaker for several minutes and restore it. A control that has latched into a fault state will often clear, and if the fault returns immediately you have learned something useful: it is being caused rather than remembered.

What not to do is order a control board on the strength of a blank screen. Boards are among the most expensive parts on the cabinet and among the least often actually at fault.

Where moisture comes into it

Touch panels fail from humidity more than from age. A cabinet in a kitchen that runs damp, or one where a door seal has been leaking cold air into the surround for months, ends up with condensation reaching the back of the panel. That is why a control complaint sometimes turns out to be a gasket job — fix the seal and the panel stops misbehaving.

When to have it looked at

If the cabinet is no longer holding temperature as well as displaying oddly, treat it as a cooling fault and not a panel fault. If the display is wrong but the food is fine, it is genuinely less urgent than it feels — but a thermistor reading incorrectly can be regulating incorrectly too, and that is worth measuring before it costs you a freezer full of food.
