Sub-Zero repair in Cambridge
Cambridge refrigeration is mostly small refrigeration. Where a suburban kitchen takes a pair of full-height columns, a converted rowhouse or a mill-building loft takes a 30-inch built-in, a couple of undercounter drawers, or an integrated cabinet sized to the one wall that could carry it.

Small cabinets, hard installs
Undercounter and integrated units are the most demanding installs in the Sub-Zero range to service, and it is nothing to do with the appliance. They are boxed in on three sides, they usually vent through a toe-kick grille that has been carpeted over or blocked by a plinth, and getting one out means clearing the counter above it rather than simply rolling it forward.
Add a third-floor condo, a stairwell with a turn in it and resident parking, and the logistics of the visit deserve a sentence on the phone before the diagnosis does.

What fails here
Toe-kick airflow is the recurring theme. A blocked grille on an undercounter unit raises the compartment a few degrees, and the owner notices when wine tastes wrong or the ice bin never refills, not when the temperature drifts. Beyond that: drawer runners and closing geometry, the small evaporator fans these units use, and drain lines that ice at the back because the run is short and cold.
On the larger built-ins in the older houses, the faults are the same four this bench sees everywhere — defrost, fans, thermistors and door seals.

Parts for a cabinet nobody stocks
Cambridge has a lot of early built-ins still working, and parts availability rather than diagnosis is what decides those jobs. That question is worth its own page.

Ours sits at the far end of a long addition and kept warming through the night. Airflow behind the cabinet was choked where ducting had been boxed in during the remodel. He opened it up and it has been fine.

Door alarm going off at night with the column shut. The magnet strip inside the gasket had rolled over on itself. New gasket, doors realigned.

August humidity and the bin smelled stale no matter how often I cleaned it out. The drain pump was weak and leaving standing water sitting underneath the machine. New pump, a full descale, fresh tubing on the outlet, and three weeks on there is still no smell.
