Freezers, columns and drawers
A freezer tells you what is wrong with it by where the frost is, and reading that pattern before the panel comes off is most of the diagnosis.

Frost as evidence
Frost sheeting evenly across the back wall points at the defrost circuit: a heater that has failed open, a terminator that is no longer closing, or a control that has stopped calling for the cycle. Frost concentrated at one spot points at air — a fan that has stalled or a duct that is obstructed, so one part of the coil is doing all the work.
Ice in the base of the compartment, or water appearing below it, is the drain line. It freezes at the point where it passes through the cabinet wall, backs up, and finds its way out somewhere it should not.

The display is not the temperature
A common and expensive misunderstanding: the number on the front is what the control believes, derived from a thermistor. When ice cream is soft and the display reads zero, the display is not lying — the sensor is. A thermistor measured cold and again at cabinet temperature settles that question in minutes, and it is a cheap part.

Drawer freezers
Drawer units add a mechanical failure mode the columns do not have. A drawer that no longer closes flush against its frame leaks cold continuously, frosts along one edge and eventually ices the runners solid. Runners, alignment and drawer gaskets are wearing parts on these, and they are serviceable.
